When you move to Eastern Idaho, you can choose to live in the city, in the country, or in recreational areas.

Cities in East Idaho You Can Move To

Cities in East Idaho include Idaho Falls, Rexburg, Rigby, St Anthony, Ashton, and Island Park. Idaho Falls is the most developed city with a population of over 60,000. You will find shopping, a lot of restaurants, and most services you would expect from a big city. 

Rexburg has a population of over 30,000. The city is home to potato farmers and Brigham Young University Idaho. Melaleuca, Progrexion, and Navex Global are in town because of the student population. Rexburg is big enough to support a Super Walmart.

Rigby has a population of over 5000, but don't let that number deceive you. Rigby is in Jefferson County and is a commuter community. The population increases when you account for all the homes built in the county that are not in Rigby city. Rigby is famous for being the birthplace of television. Philo Farnsworth invented the vacuum tube television display in Rigby.

St Anthony is a small city North East of Rexburg and has a population of around 5000. It is the county seat of Fremont County. The Henry's Fork River flows through St Anthony. Some of St Anthony's growth has come from people seeking available housing close to BYUI. It is a tight-knit community and has a great small-town feel.

Ashton Idaho is a small farming community off highway 20 on the way to Island Park. Ashton is known as the seed potato capital of the world. It is a small town, with a population of less than 2000 people. But it is also the meeting place for a much larger area of farmers who live and work in Fremont County. Most of the housing in this area is rural and spread out. You'll have plenty of space to spread out if you relocate to this area.

Island Park is in Fremont County Idaho and is a recreational area with homes and cabins. Located near the Caribou-Targhee National Forest, Island Park is a favorite for outdoor activity. You will find hundreds of miles of trails weaving themselves through mountain meadows. The scenery is beautiful in every season. In the summer there is river rafting, quad and motorcycle riding, and fishing. In the winter you will find people riding snow sleds, cross country skiing, and snowshoeing.  And no matter what season, you will find anglers fishing rivers, streams, and lakes. Recreational properties range from small cabins to resort quality homes. Bills Island is a favorite.

Regardless of where you choose to live, living in Eastern Idaho is awesome. The people are friendly and the cost of living is low compared to neighboring states and the West Coast. 

Moving to East Idaho

East Idaho is remote.  Many people fly to Salt Lake City, rent a car, and drive the 3.5 hours to East Idaho. We are very close to Yellowstone National Park and the Grand Tetons. So you will want to make plans before you come to visit.  One of the best ways to do that is with your Realtor. We can help you understand each area of Eastern Idaho and what it offers. You probably don't want to live in Ashton if you like city life and lots of shopping areas close by. On the other hand, if you enjoy fishing and solitude, living in Idaho Falls or Rexburg may not be your cup of tea.

When you move to Idaho you will likely be surprised by low DMV fees, property taxes, and cost of running a business. But you will also have to get used to a more conservative lifestyle. You may need to wait longer for the snow to be cleared, or deal with potholes a bit longer than you may have experienced in the city. A majority of people in East Idaho prefer to keep the taxes low and are willing to put up with deferred maintenance. Many would prefer less government than more.

Living in Eastern Idaho is what you make it, but there are some perks. For example, you won't wait in line very long at the DMV to register a vehicle. And when you visit a government building, they will treat you like the next-door neighbor. If you wait on hold when you call the state, it won't take long. You can usually get help quick. People are friendly around these parts. They are very helpful. It isn't uncommon to see people pushing cars out of snowdrifts, shoveling each other's sidewalks, and helping when they see a need.

We basically have two seasons here. They are winter and not winter. So you will need to be prepared. Make sure you have the right winter clothing and you'll be fine when the mercury gets down to -10 degrees.  You might want to budget for a snowblower too! They come in very handy and can save a lot of wear and tear on your back. Be prepared and you'll have a great winter.

The summers are beautiful. Sometimes spring can take a lot of time to ramp up and sometimes fall only lasts a few weeks. You never know. But when it is nice weather in Eastern Idaho, there is nothing to compare. Most people head for the hills and enjoy all that summer has to offer. If you are a gardener, you will need to adjust and possibly get a greenhouse. We have a short growing season here. You'll need to start your tomatoes in a greenhouse and be very careful when you put them out. It is not uncommon to have freezes well into June. Check with your local extension office for planting times or you may lose everything you plant!

There are reasons not to move to Idaho. If you don't like four seasons, you may want to reconsider moving. We have cold winters and warm summers. Here are some other reasons not to move to Idaho:

  1. You want to change Idaho to make it like California or New York. The locals do not react kindly to this kind of activity.
  2. You don't like the outdoors.
  3. You like large cities with large shopping malls.
  4. You like to choose from many restaurants.
  5. You don't like shopping at Walmart.
  6. You love sitting in rush hour traffic.
  7. You prefer fashion over fishing.
  8. You almost always have to drive a long way to find an airport.
